The Blue Martini
The Blue Martini is a novel that exemplifies, in detail, the migrant’s sufferings during their desperate struggle to accomplish the American dream; the testimony of one of those thousands who go through a journey to get financial wealth and a better life for them and their families. It describes, accurately, how gigantic and hostile is a still-unknown-by-many territory, full of dangers and evil, but, also full of hope and union among those who travel together as illegal migrants.

Book review
by Armando Acosta
With a beautiful narrative, The Blue Martini presents Alex’s life, who must go through hell trying to accomplish his dreams. This book also involves acts of social and political corruption on both sides of the border. Armando Acosta, the author, has written a relentless testimony of the terrible experiences that many must overcome to find their purpose in life, extending to the reader a simple novel, with a simple structure that makes it deliciously clear and specific.
Alex is a semi-pro soccer player determined to fulfill his dream of playing in the professional league, but, after leaving everything aside to accomplish his goals, a terrible injury takes that dream away from him, pushing him to the claws of alcoholism; this way, the course of his life changes forever.
Getting drunk at parties, he reaches the bottom of his disease. Tired of his tormented and eventful life in Mexico City, Alex decides to try and cross the American border illegally, to try and change his luck. And here comes the plot’s twist. The main character would have to face his worst nightmare: the inner struggle to defeat his alcoholism’s demon, which sinks Alex further down every moment, pushing him into making wrong choices, while a series of tragic events unleashes, making him think of surrender and letting it all on the hands of destiny; a journey through a corrupt and violent world, where the cartels’ heads can control everything on both sides of the border.
This story develops in a beautiful place, enigmatic and full of magic, where the main character will face stereotypes and cultural barriers which become his next big obstacle. Alex arrives, not aware of it, to a place in which he’ll find love and the opportunity of recovering his lost life’s dream.
The Blue Martini shows, in a clear way, from the author’s perspective, the experiences of just one among the millions of illegals who struggle to survive and prosper in the wealthiest and most powerful country in the world.
